On the velocity jump discontinuity for single bubbles rising in a viscoelastic fluid

چکیده
It is well known that bubbles rising in viscoelastic liquids may exhibit a jump discontinuity of the rise velocity as critical bubble volume exceeded. This phenomenon has been extensively investigated literature, both by means experiments and numerical simulations. The occurrence seems to be associated with change shape under formation pointed tip at rear appearance so-called negative wake, liquid behind pointing opposite direction viscous Newtonian fluids. We revisit this topic, building mainly on our recent work. Besides detailed information employed methods techniques, talk reports findings from local conformation tensor analysis, which able explain terminal self-amplifying mechanism.

Growing bubbles rising in line
Over many years the author and others have given theories for bubbles rising in line in a liquid. Theory has usually suggested that the bubbles will tend towards a stable distance apart, but experiments have often showed them pairing off and sometimes coalescing. However, existing theory seems not to deal adequately with the case of bubbles growing as they rise, which they do if the liquid is b...
متن کاملFluid Velocity Slip and Temperature Jump at a Solid Surface
A comprehensive review of current analytical models, experimental techniques, and influencing factors is carried out to highlight the current challenges in this area. The study of fluid–solid boundary conditions has been ongoing for more than a century, starting from gas–solid interfaces and progressing to that of the more complex liquid–solid case. Breakthroughs have been made on the theoretic...
متن کاملRecent Developments on the Slow Viscoelastic Flow past Spheres and Bubbles
A review is presented covering the latest contributions to the slow viscoelastic flow past solid spheres and bubbles. The existing theoretical approaches are reviewed together with the available numerical methods. The proximity of container walls and its effect upon the motion of a sphere is also considered. Emphasis has been made on presenting recent experimental and numerical work intended to...
متن کاملSimulation of a cusped bubble rising in a viscoelastic fluid with a new numerical method
We developed a new lattice Boltzmann method that allows the simulation of two-phase flow of viscoelastic liquid mixtures. We used this new method to simulate a bubble rising in a viscoelastic fluid and were able to reproduce the experimentally observed cusp at the trailing end of the bubble. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
